What Is the UTBK-SNBT?
The UTBK (Ujian Tulis Berbasis Komputer — Computer-Based Written Examination) is Indonesia's national university entrance test, used for the SNBT (Seleksi Nasional Berdasarkan Tes — National Selection Based on Tests) pathway to state universities (PTN). It is administered by the National University Admissions Committee (SNPMB) and is offered at designated test centers across Indonesia.
The exam covers three main components: Scholastic Potential Test (Tes Potensi Skolastik/TPS) measuring reasoning and general aptitude, Literacy and Reasoning in Bahasa Indonesia and English, and Mathematical Literacy. The computer-based format means results are available relatively quickly after the exam period ends.
How to Prepare for UTBK
Effective UTBK preparation requires sustained practice with all three test components. The Scholastic Potential Test (TPS) includes verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, spatial reasoning, and logical reasoning sub-sections — these skills can be improved significantly with targeted practice.
For the Literacy components, read widely in both Indonesian and English, focusing on understanding the structure and argument of academic texts. For Mathematical Literacy, review core mathematics concepts from high school and practice applying them to real-world contexts. Download official UTBK practice materials from the SNPMB website and complete full timed simulations in the weeks leading up to the exam. Note that each candidate may only sit UTBK once per year.
UTBK Scores and University Admission
UTBK scores are reported for each component and as a composite score. Indonesian state universities (PTN) use these scores to select students through the SNBT pathway. Each program at each PTN sets its own minimum score cutoff (passing grade) based on available places and applicant demand.
The most competitive programs — medicine, dentistry, and law at top PTNs such as Universitas Indonesia, Gadjah Mada, and Institut Teknologi Bandung — typically require composite scores in the top 5–10% of all test-takers. UTBK scores are valid for one year and cannot be used in subsequent admissions cycles, making preparation for each sitting critical.
