What Is the ENEM?
The ENEM (Exame Nacional do Ensino Médio / National High School Examination) is Brazil's largest and most important standardized exam. Created in 1998 and restructured in 2009, ENEM serves as the primary gateway to public and private universities throughout Brazil. Over 5 million students register annually, making it one of the largest examinations in the world. ENEM scores are used for admission through SISU (Unified Selection System) for public universities, ProUni (University for All Program) for scholarships at private institutions, and FIES (Student Financing Fund) for student loans. The exam tests knowledge across four areas: Languages and Codes, Human Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Mathematics, plus an essay (redação). ENEM results are valid for university applications for several years.
ENEM 2026 Schedule and Structure
ENEM 2026 is scheduled for November 8, 2026 (first day) and November 15, 2026 (second day). The exam is held over two consecutive Sundays. On the first day, students complete 90 multiple-choice questions covering Languages and Codes and Human Sciences, plus the essay, with 5 hours and 30 minutes allowed. On the second day, students answer 90 questions on Natural Sciences and Mathematics in 5 hours. Each knowledge area contains 45 questions, totaling 180 multiple-choice questions across both days. The essay requires students to write an argumentative text on a topic revealed on exam day, following a specific structural format. ENEM uses Item Response Theory (IRT) for scoring, which means the final score considers not just the number of correct answers but also the difficulty and discrimination of each question.
How to Prepare for ENEM
ENEM preparation should begin well in advance given the broad scope of the exam. Start by understanding the ENEM competency matrix (matriz de competências), which outlines the skills assessed in each knowledge area. For Languages, practice text interpretation and review grammar fundamentals, including English or Spanish as a foreign language component. For Human Sciences, focus on connecting historical events to contemporary issues, as ENEM favors interdisciplinary questions. Natural Sciences questions often involve applying concepts to real-world scenarios, so practice contextual problem-solving. Mathematics requires fluency in all core areas, from basic arithmetic to geometry, statistics, and functions. The essay is worth up to 1,000 points and follows five competencies — practice writing argumentative texts regularly and review high-scoring essays from previous years. Complete full-length simulated exams to build endurance for the lengthy test days.
