Eid al-Fitr Countdown
Countdown to Eid al-Fitr — celebrating the end of Ramadan
When Is Eid al-Fitr 2026?
Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan and is one of the two major Islamic holidays. In 2026, it is expected to fall around March 20, 2026 (1 Shawwal 1447 AH). The exact date depends on the sighting of the Shawwal crescent moon.
The celebration begins with a special morning prayer followed by family visits, feasting, and gift-giving. Muslims greet each other with "Eid Mubarak" (Blessed Eid).
How Eid al-Fitr Is Celebrated
Eid al-Fitr celebrations include wearing new clothes, attending the Eid prayer, visiting relatives, and exchanging gifts and sweets. Children receive "Eidiya" — monetary gifts from elders. Each culture has its own special foods and traditions.
In Arab countries, families gather for large feasts. In Southeast Asia, open-house traditions welcome neighbors and friends. In Turkey, it's called Şeker Bayramı (Sugar Festival) and sweets are central to the celebrations.
Zakat al-Fitr
Zakat al-Fitr is a mandatory charity given before Eid prayer. It purifies the fasting person and provides for those in need so they can also celebrate. The amount is approximately 2.5-3 kg of staple food per family member.
It must be distributed before the Eid prayer. It may be given one or two days before Eid. The purpose is to ensure that every Muslim can enjoy the celebration regardless of their financial situation.
