Islamic New Year Countdown
Countdown to the Islamic New Year (1st Muharram)
When Is the Next Islamic New Year?
The Islamic New Year falls on the 1st of Muharram, the first month of the Hijri calendar. The date shifts approximately 10-11 days earlier each year in the Gregorian calendar because the Islamic calendar is lunar-based.
This countdown shows the remaining time until the next 1 Muharram. The Hijri calendar began with the Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) migration from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE.
The Hijri Calendar
The Hijri calendar was established by Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab, using the Prophet's migration as its starting point. It consists of 12 lunar months: Muharram, Safar, Rabi al-Awwal, Rabi al-Thani, Jumada al-Ula, Jumada al-Thani, Rajab, Sha'ban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Dhul Qi'dah, and Dhul Hijjah.
Each month is 29 or 30 days based on the lunar cycle, making the Hijri year about 354 days β 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year.
The Day of Ashura
Ashura falls on the 10th of Muharram and holds great significance in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) fasted on this day because it was the day God saved Moses from Pharaoh. Fasting on Ashura expiates sins of the previous year.
It is recommended to fast the 9th and 10th of Muharram together. In many Muslim countries, special sweets and foods are prepared and shared with family and neighbors.
