What Is the Mala Matura?
The Mala Matura (Small Maturity Exam, officially završni ispit — final exam) is Serbia's standardized examination taken by students at the end of Grade 8 (the final year of primary school). It determines admission to gymnasia (grammar schools), vocational high schools, and specialized secondary programs.
The exam covers three subjects: Serbian Language, Mathematics, and a combined test of the subjects studied in Grades 7 and 8 (a rotating "combined" test that changes each year). Results are published in June, and high school enrollment based on these results takes place shortly after. The Mala Matura effectively acts as Serbia's first major educational selection mechanism.
How to Prepare for Mala Matura
Effective Mala Matura preparation centers on thoroughly mastering the Grade 7–8 curriculum in Serbian Language and Mathematics, which together form the two largest scored components.
For Serbian Language, practice essay writing across all required forms (argumentative, narrative, descriptive), review grammar rules, and study set reading texts thoroughly. For Mathematics, ensure mastery of all topics from Grades 5–8 including fractions, equations, geometry (areas, volumes, the Pythagorean theorem), and basic functions. For the combined test, the Ministry of Education announces each year which subject area will be examined — follow official announcements and revise that subject intensively in the final weeks.
Mala Matura Scores and High School Admission
Students receive scores for each of the three exam components. These are combined with school grades from Grades 6–8 to produce a composite admission score (up to 100 points). School grades contribute up to 60 points; exam results contribute up to 40 points.
Admission to prestigious gymnasia in Belgrade — such as Matematička Gimnazija — requires near-perfect scores. Each high school publishes its enrollment score cutoff (rang lista) after results are released. Students select up to 20 programs in order of preference during enrollment, and places are assigned by score. Tracking the exact days remaining with this countdown helps students build a realistic revision plan across all three exam components.
