Saudi Founding Day Countdown
Countdown to Saudi Founding Day β February 22
When Is Saudi Founding Day 2026?
Saudi Founding Day is celebrated on February 22 each year, commemorating the establishment of the first Saudi state by Imam Muhammad bin Saud in 1727 (1139 AH). It became an official public holiday in 2022.
The celebration focuses on Saudi heritage and culture, with traditional costumes, historical exhibitions, folk performances, and cultural events across the Kingdom.
The First Saudi State
In 1727, Imam Muhammad bin Saud established the first Saudi state in Diriyah, northwest of present-day Riyadh. The state expanded to encompass most of the Arabian Peninsula and laid the foundations for Saudi governance.
The first Saudi state lasted until 1818, followed by the second Saudi state (1824-1891), and finally the modern Kingdom of Saudi Arabia founded by King Abdulaziz in 1932. Founding Day celebrates these deep historical roots.
Diriyah β The Birthplace
Diriyah was the capital of the first Saudi state and is located in Wadi Hanifah, northwest of Riyadh. The At-Turaif district is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its historical significance.
Today, Diriyah is undergoing a massive development project under Vision 2030, transforming it into a world-class cultural and tourism destination while preserving its authentic heritage.
