Saint Nicholas of Myra (270–343 AD) was a Christian bishop in what is now Demre, Turkey. He became famous for his extraordinary generosity, particularly toward children and the poor. The most well-known legend tells of him secretly providing dowries for three impoverished sisters.

Over the centuries, his story spread throughout Europe, and each culture developed its own traditions. The Dutch Sinterklaas tradition heavily influenced the modern figure of Santa Claus when Dutch settlers brought it to America. Today, St. Nicholas Day remains a distinctly European celebration, separate from Christmas.
