St. Nicholas Day Traditions Around Europe
Celebrations vary across countries, but the spirit of giving and kindness unites them all. In the Netherlands and Belgium, Sinterklaas arrives by steamboat from Spain in mid-November, kicking off weeks of festivities. Children place their shoes by the fireplace with carrots for his horse and sing traditional songs.
In Germany and Austria, Nikolaustag sees children finding sweets, oranges, and small gifts in boots left outside their doors. The tradition of leaving shoes or boots out on the evening of December 5th is widespread. In some regions, St. Nicholas is accompanied by Krampus, a fearsome companion who warns misbehaving children.
The History of Saint Nicholas
Saint Nicholas of Myra (270–343 AD) was a Christian bishop in what is now Demre, Turkey. He became famous for his extraordinary generosity, particularly toward children and the poor. The most well-known legend tells of him secretly providing dowries for three impoverished sisters.
Over the centuries, his story spread throughout Europe, and each culture developed its own traditions. The Dutch Sinterklaas tradition heavily influenced the modern figure of Santa Claus when Dutch settlers brought it to America. Today, St. Nicholas Day remains a distinctly European celebration, separate from Christmas.
