Canada's 6 Time Zones: A Complete Overview

Canada is the second-largest country in the world by total area, and it spans six time zones from the Atlantic coast to the Pacific. This makes Canada one of the widest single-country time zone spans globally, rivaling only Russia and the United States.

From east to west, here are all six Canadian time zones:

Time Zone Abbreviation UTC Offset (Standard) UTC Offset (DST) Provinces/Regions
Newfoundland Time NST UTC−3:30 NDT (UTC−2:30) Newfoundland & Labrador (island portion)
Atlantic Time AST UTC−4 ADT (UTC−3) Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI, Labrador mainland
Eastern Time EST UTC−5 EDT (UTC−4) Ontario (most), Quebec
Central Time CST UTC−6 CDT (UTC−5) Manitoba, Saskatchewan (no DST), western Ontario
Mountain Time MST UTC−7 MDT (UTC−6) Alberta, eastern BC, Northwest Territories
Pacific Time PST UTC−8 PDT (UTC−7) British Columbia (most), Yukon (no DST)

Notable exceptions:

  • Saskatchewan observes Central Standard Time (CST, UTC−6) year-round and does not observe DST. This means during summer, Saskatchewan time is the same as Mountain Daylight Time (MDT, UTC−6).
  • Yukon permanently observes Mountain Standard Time (MST, UTC−7) year-round since 2020, with no DST. Clocks no longer change in Yukon.
  • Parts of northeastern British Columbia (Peace River region, Fort Nelson) are on Mountain Time instead of Pacific.
  • Newfoundland has a unique half-hour offset (UTC−3:30 standard, UTC−2:30 summer), the only half-hour time zone in the Americas.

For the most visited Canadian city, see Toronto time. For cross-border comparisons with the US, see New York time.

Current Time Across Canadian Provinces and Territories

Because Canada spans 6 time zones, a business day that starts in Halifax, Nova Scotia at 9:00 AM AST has not even begun in Vancouver, BC — which is still at 5:00 AM PST. This 4-hour gap between Canada's eastern and western business hubs is a real scheduling challenge for national companies.

Current time comparison across Canada — Summer (DST in effect):

Province/City Time Zone UTC Offset (Summer) When Halifax is 9 AM ADT
St. John's, NL NDT UTC−2:30 9:30 AM
Halifax, NS ADT UTC−3 9:00 AM
Montreal, QC EDT UTC−4 8:00 AM
Toronto, ON EDT UTC−4 8:00 AM
Ottawa, ON EDT UTC−4 8:00 AM
Winnipeg, MB CDT UTC−5 7:00 AM
Regina, SK CST (no DST) UTC−6 6:00 AM
Calgary, AB MDT UTC−6 6:00 AM
Edmonton, AB MDT UTC−6 6:00 AM
Vancouver, BC PDT UTC−7 5:00 AM
Whitehorse, YT MST (no DST) UTC−7 5:00 AM

During winter (standard time, no DST):

Province/City Time Zone UTC Offset (Winter) When Toronto is 9 AM EST
St. John's, NL NST UTC−3:30 10:30 AM
Halifax, NS AST UTC−4 10:00 AM
Toronto, ON EST UTC−5 9:00 AM
Winnipeg, MB CST UTC−6 8:00 AM
Regina, SK CST UTC−6 8:00 AM
Calgary, AB MST UTC−7 7:00 AM
Vancouver, BC PST UTC−8 6:00 AM

Canada vs. US Time Zone Alignment

Despite being separate countries with different time zone systems, Canada and the United States share most of the same time zone infrastructure. This alignment simplifies cross-border business and communication significantly.

Canada–US time zone equivalents:

Canadian Zone US Equivalent Cities on Both Sides of Border
Atlantic Time (AST/ADT) No direct US equivalent (US territories use AST) Halifax neighbors Maine (EST)
Eastern Time (EST/EDT) Eastern Time (EST/EDT) Toronto–Detroit, Montreal–Burlington VT
Central Time (CST/CDT) Central Time (CST/CDT) Winnipeg–Minneapolis, Regina–Bismarck
Mountain Time (MST/MDT) Mountain Time (MST/MDT) Calgary–Great Falls MT
Pacific Time (PST/PDT) Pacific Time (PST/PDT) Vancouver–Seattle

Key cross-border city pairs that share the same time zone:

  • Toronto, ON and Detroit, MI — Both Eastern Time. Major automotive and trade corridor.
  • Vancouver, BC and Seattle, WA — Both Pacific Time. Tech, trade, and tourism hub.
  • Calgary, AB and Helena, MT — Both Mountain Time.
  • Windsor, ON and Detroit, MI — Both Eastern Time. The busiest US–Canada land crossing.

Newfoundland's unique position: NST (UTC−3:30) has no US equivalent at all. St. John's, NL is 30 minutes ahead of Halifax (Atlantic) and 1.5 hours ahead of Toronto (Eastern). This half-hour offset is purely historical and has been maintained since the early 20th century.

The Canada–US DST asymmetry: Most of Canada and the US observe DST on the same dates (second Sunday in March, first Sunday in November). However, Saskatchewan's permanent CST and Yukon's permanent MST mean these provinces don't shift, while their US counterparts at the same longitude do.

Daylight Saving Time in Canada

Daylight Saving Time in Canada follows rules very similar to the United States, but with important provincial exceptions. Most Canadian provinces observe DST, but not all, and the trend toward eliminating DST has accelerated in recent years.

DST schedule in Canada (for provinces that observe it):

Event Date Effect
Spring Forward Second Sunday of March, 2:00 AM Clocks advance 1 hour
Fall Back First Sunday of November, 2:00 AM Clocks fall back 1 hour

This is identical to the US DST schedule.

Provinces and territories NOT observing DST:

Region Standard Time Year-Round Offset Notes
Saskatchewan CST UTC−6 Has not observed DST since 1966
Yukon MST (year-round) UTC−7 Abolished DST in November 2020
Parts of Quebec Varies UTC−5 Some northern communities exempt
Creston, BC PST (year-round) UTC−8 Local exception

British Columbia and the US–Canada DST synchrony: Since British Columbia (Vancouver, Victoria) and Washington State (Seattle) both observe Pacific Time on the same DST dates, the Vancouver–Seattle time difference is always zero. However, BC has been debating permanent PDT (UTC−7 year-round) for years. A 2019 BC government vote supported the change, pending US federal action on similar legislation — which has not yet occurred.

Practical impact for US–Canada callers: Because most of Canada (except Saskatchewan and Yukon) follows the same DST schedule as the US, the standard time zone offsets between Canadian and American cities remain stable year-round. Toronto and New York are always on the same time. Vancouver and Seattle are always on the same time.

Major Canadian Cities and Their Time Zones

For quick reference, here is a comprehensive lookup of major Canadian cities and their time zones, including how they compare to New York and Los Angeles:

Eastern Canada:

City Province Time Zone vs. NYC vs. LA
