Cologne City Guide
Cologne is one of Germany's oldest and most culturally vibrant cities, founded by the Romans in 50 AD as Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium. Today it is famous worldwide for three things above all: its cathedral, its beer, and its carnival.
The Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom) is the undisputed centerpiece of the city. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is the largest Gothic church in northern Europe and took an astonishing 632 years to build — construction began in 1248 and was only completed in 1880. Its twin spires soar 157 meters above the Rhine and were the tallest structures in the world when finished. The cathedral houses the Shrine of the Three Kings, said to contain the relics of the Biblical Magi, and draws over 6 million visitors per year.
Kölsch is Cologne's fiercely local beer — a pale, top-fermented lager-style ale served in a slim 0.2-liter glass called a Stange. By the Kölsch Konvention, true Kölsch can only be brewed within the Cologne city boundaries. Locals take this seriously: ordering anything else in a traditional Brauhaus will earn you a raised eyebrow.
Karneval (Cologne Carnival) is Germany's most spectacular carnival celebration. Centered on the Thursday before Ash Wednesday (Weiberfastnacht), the festivities draw over a million revelers to the streets in costumes, with parades, music, and the symbolic storming of the city hall. The final Rose Monday parade (Rosenmontagszug) is one of the largest in the world.
The Old Town (Altstadt) runs along the Rhine riverbank, with its famous Hohenzollern Bridge covered in thousands of love locks. Eau de Cologne, the world-famous fragrance, was invented here — the original producer, 4711, still operates from its historic address on Glockengasse. Cologne Bonn Airport (CGN) serves the region with domestic and European connections.
