What Time Is It in Indonesia Right Now?

Indonesia is one of the few countries in the world that spans three official time zones, stretching 5,100 km from Aceh in the west to Papua in the east across more than 17,000 islands.

  • WIB — Waktu Indonesia Barat (Western Indonesian Time) UTC+7: Covers Jakarta, all of Sumatra, West Kalimantan, and Central Kalimantan. This zone is home to the capital city and the majority of the population.
  • WITA — Waktu Indonesia Tengah (Central Indonesian Time) UTC+8: Covers Bali, South Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and the Nusa Tenggara islands (including Lombok and Flores). This is the zone most international tourists encounter.
  • WIT — Waktu Indonesia Timur (Eastern Indonesian Time) UTC+9: Covers Papua (including West Papua province) and the Maluku islands. WIT is 2 hours ahead of Jakarta.

Indonesia does not observe Daylight Saving Time (DST) — clocks never change, making it easy to track the time year-round. Use the World Clock to check the current time in any Indonesian city instantly.

Indonesia vs US Time Differences

Because the United States observes Daylight Saving Time while Indonesia does not, the difference between the two countries shifts by one hour depending on the season.

Key travel tip: Bali is 1 hour ahead of Jakarta — a detail that many tourists overlook when booking connecting flights. If your international flight lands in Jakarta (CGK) and you have a domestic connection to Bali (DPS), always confirm whether departure times are listed in WIB or WITA. Missing this 1-hour difference is one of the most common causes of missed connections in Indonesia.

Indonesia's 3 Time Zones: WIB, WITA & WIT Explained

Here is a full breakdown of which provinces and popular destinations fall in each of Indonesia's three time zones:

Time ZoneUTC OffsetProvinces / RegionsKey Tourist Destinations
WIB (Western)UTC+7DKI Jakarta, all Sumatra provinces, West Kalimantan, Central KalimantanJakarta, Yogyakarta, Borobudur, Medan, Banda Aceh, Lake Toba
WITA (Central)UTC+8Bali, South Kalimantan, East Kalimantan (incl. IKN Nusantara), North Kalimantan, all Sulawesi provinces, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa TenggaraBali (Ubud, Seminyak, Kuta), Lombok, Komodo Island, Makassar, Manado, Labuan Bajo
WIT (Eastern)UTC+9North Maluku, Maluku, West Papua, Papua, South Papua, Highland Papua, Central PapuaRaja Ampat, Jayapura, Ambon, Ternate, Manokwari

In 2012, the Indonesian government proposed consolidating the country to a single time zone (UTC+8 or UTC+9) to simplify business and administration. The proposal was ultimately not implemented due to agricultural and social concerns — farmers in Sumatra, for example, would face very late sunrises under UTC+9. As a result, domestic flights in Indonesia regularly cross timezone boundaries, and airline schedules always specify the local time at the departure city.

Indonesia's new capital, Nusantara (IKN), is being built in East Kalimantan — and falls under WITA (UTC+8), not WIB like the old capital Jakarta.

Bali & Top Tourist Destinations: Time Guide

Bali is the most-visited destination in Indonesia and operates on WITA (UTC+8) — the same time zone as Singapore, Hong Kong, Manila, and Kuala Lumpur. This means travelers arriving from Singapore face no jet lag whatsoever.

  • Bali (DPS — Ngurah Rai International Airport): UTC+8. Main tourist areas include Ubud (cultural heartland), Seminyak and Kuta (beach and nightlife), and Nusa Dua (luxury resorts). Average temperature 27–33°C year-round.
  • Jakarta (CGK — Soekarno-Hatta International Airport): UTC+7. Indonesia's largest city and main international gateway. Remember: Jakarta is 1 hour behind Bali.
  • Yogyakarta (JOG): UTC+7 (WIB). Base for visiting Borobudur (world's largest Buddhist temple) and Prambanan. Despite being geographically central, Yogyakarta uses WIB.
  • Komodo Island (LBJ — Labuan Bajo Airport): UTC+8 (WITA). Gateway to Komodo National Park and Komodo Dragons.
  • Raja Ampat (RJM — Domine Eduard Osok Airport via Sorong): UTC+9 (WIT). World-class diving destination in West Papua.

Business Hours & Indonesian Culture

Understanding local business hours is essential when calling, emailing, or scheduling meetings with Indonesian contacts.

  • Private sector: Monday–Friday, 08:00–17:00 local time (with 1-hour lunch break, typically 12:00–13:00).
  • Government offices: Monday–Friday, 07:30–16:00. Some offices close early on Fridays.
  • Friday prayer (Salat Jumat): Approximately 11:30–13:00 on Fridays. Many Muslim-majority businesses close or reduce operations during this window. Indonesia has the world's largest Muslim population (~230 million).
  • Ramadan: Business hours shift significantly during the Islamic holy month. Offices may open and close 1–2 hours earlier, restaurants may be closed during daylight hours in more conservative regions, and the pace of business slows considerably.
  • Banks: Typically 08:00–15:00 or 08:00–16:00, Monday–Friday.
  • Shopping malls: Usually 10:00–22:00 daily.

Cultural notes: Bahasa Indonesia is the national lingua franca, unifying speakers of 700+ regional languages. Indonesia's population of 275+ million makes it the 4th most populous country on Earth. The business culture values relationship-building (basa-basi) and indirect communication. Tipping is appreciated but not culturally expected — 5–10% at restaurants is common in tourist areas.
