What Time Is It in Wellington Right Now?

Wellington, the capital of New Zealand, uses New Zealand Standard Time (NZST, UTC+12) during winter and New Zealand Daylight Time (NZDT, UTC+13) during summer. New Zealand observes Daylight Saving Time on the Southern Hemisphere schedule:

  • Clocks spring forward (NZST → NZDT, UTC+12 → UTC+13): Last Sunday of September, 2:00 AM → 3:00 AM
  • Clocks fall back (NZDT → NZST, UTC+13 → UTC+12): First Sunday of April, 3:00 AM → 2:00 AM

This means Wellington observes DST during the New Zealand summer (October through March) — the opposite of the Northern Hemisphere schedule.

Wellington uses the same time zone as the entire country, including Auckland, Christchurch, Hamilton, and Queenstown. There is only one time zone for the main islands of New Zealand (the Chatham Islands, 850 km east, use a separate offset of UTC+12:45/UTC+13:45).

At 41°S latitude, Wellington is one of the world's southernmost national capital cities, surpassed only by Canberra (Australia) at 35°S and some South American capitals. Use the World Clock to compare Wellington time with any other city.

Wellington vs US Time Differences

Wellington sits near the International Date Line and is one of the first major cities to start each new day. For Americans, Wellington is effectively "tomorrow" — a Monday morning call in Wellington lands on Sunday evening in the United States.

US CityUS Time Zonevs Wellington NZST (UTC+12)vs Wellington NZDT (UTC+13)
New YorkEST/EDT (UTC−5/−4)+17 hours+17 hours*
ChicagoCST/CDT (UTC−6/−5)+18 hours+18 hours*
DenverMST/MDT (UTC−7/−6)+19 hours+19 hours*
Los AngelesPST/PDT (UTC−8/−7)+20 hours+20 hours*

*The difference stays roughly constant because both New Zealand and the United States shift their clocks, but on opposite seasonal schedules. The gap can vary by 1 hour for a few weeks each year during the transition periods when one country has changed and the other has not yet.

Practical scheduling guide:

  • If it is 8:00 AM Monday in Wellington, it is approximately 12:00 PM (noon) Sunday in Los Angeles and 3:00 PM Sunday in New York.
  • If it is 5:00 PM Friday in New York, it is approximately 10:00 AM Saturday in Wellington.
  • The best overlap window for US–Wellington video calls is typically 7:00–9:00 AM Wellington time, which corresponds to early afternoon the previous day in the US West Coast.

For comparison, see time in Australia — Sydney is 2–3 hours behind Wellington depending on DST timing.

Wellington City Guide

Wellington (population ~215,000 city / ~425,000 metro) punches well above its weight as New Zealand's cultural and political capital. While Auckland is the commercial hub, Wellington is the heart of the country's arts, film, food, and government scenes.

  • Te Papa Tongarewa (Museum of New Zealand): The national museum on the waterfront — free entry, world-class collection of Maori taonga (treasures) and natural history exhibits. Open daily.
  • Wellington Cable Car: The iconic red cable car from Lambton Quay up to the Botanic Gardens and Carter Observatory. Runs every 10 minutes, stunning harbor views.
  • Cuba Street: Wellington's bohemian quarter. Lined with independent cafes, vintage shops, street art, live music venues, and the famous Bucket Fountain. The soul of the city.
  • The Beehive (Parliament Buildings): New Zealand's distinctive circular executive wing, completed in 1977. Free guided tours available on weekdays.
  • Zealandia Ecosanctuary: A 225-hectare fenced wildlife sanctuary 15 minutes from the CBD. Home to tuatara, kaka parrots, little spotted kiwi, and other endemic species. Night tours available.
  • Weta Workshop & Weta Cave: The special effects and prop studio behind The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Avatar, and many more. Founded by director Peter Jackson. Studio tours run daily from Miramar.

"Windy Wellington": Wellington is consistently ranked among the windiest cities in the world, thanks to the Cook Strait funneling Southern Ocean winds. The city averages 173 days per year with winds over 60 km/h. Pack a windproof layer year-round.

Craft beer capital: Wellington has more bars and restaurants per capita than New York City, and is widely considered the craft beer capital of New Zealand, with dozens of independent breweries.

Wellington Airport & Getting There

Wellington Airport (WLG — Wellington International Airport) is located just 8 km southeast of the city center, making it one of the most conveniently situated airports in Australasia — typically a 20-minute drive or taxi ride from the CBD.

  • Domestic connections: Frequent flights to Auckland (1 hour), Christchurch (45 minutes), Queenstown (1h 15min), and other New Zealand cities. Air New Zealand and Jetstar operate most routes.
  • Trans-Tasman flights: Direct services to Sydney (~3h), Melbourne (~3.5h), and Brisbane (~4h). No long-haul international routes operate directly from Wellington.
  • From North America or Europe: There are no direct flights to Wellington from the US or Europe. The standard route is to fly into Auckland (AKL) first, then either take a 1-hour domestic flight to Wellington or travel the 8-hour drive down the North Island. Air New Zealand operates direct Auckland–Los Angeles and Auckland–New York (via Vancouver) routes.
  • Inter-island ferry (Interislander / Bluebridge): Wellington's Interislander terminal connects to Picton in the South Island via the Cook Strait — a scenic 3.5-hour sailing past Queen Charlotte Sound. This is arguably the most beautiful ferry crossing in the world, and a classic way to begin exploring the South Island (Marlborough wine region, Kaikoura, etc.). The ferry is the only surface transport link between New Zealand's North and South Islands.

Compare time zones before booking: Wellington is 2–3 hours ahead of Sydney and the same time zone as Auckland — important for scheduling connections. See also time in New Zealand for a full country overview.
