TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) is a standardized English proficiency test developed by ETS, designed to measure workplace communication skills. It is the most widely used English test for employment purposes across Asia, with over 7 million tests administered annually in 160+ countries.

The TOEIC Listening & Reading test is a 2-hour multiple-choice exam with 200 questions:

Listening includes photograph descriptions (Part 1), question-response (Part 2), conversations (Part 3), and talks (Part 4). Reading covers incomplete sentences (Part 5), text completion (Part 6), and reading comprehension with single and multiple passages (Part 7).

There is no penalty for wrong answers, so always answer every question. Practice with a timer set to 45 minutes for Listening and 75 minutes for Reading.

TOEIC is offered monthly in most countries, with 1–2 test dates per month at major test centers. Registration typically closes 10–15 days before the test date. Results are available within 7–10 business days.

Test fees vary by country — approximately $50–80 USD in most Asian countries. This is significantly less than IELTS or TOEFL, making TOEIC a cost-effective option for proving English proficiency in the workplace.

Tailor your study plan based on your target TOEIC score:

Target 500–600 (2–3 months): Focus on basic grammar, core vocabulary (office, finance, travel), and familiarize yourself with the test format. Practice Parts 1, 2, 5, and 6 first.

Target 700–800 (3–4 months): Master Part 5 grammar questions quickly (under 15 minutes for 30 questions), develop skimming and scanning skills for Part 7, and practice predicting answers in Parts 3 and 4. Take weekly full-length practice tests.

Target 900+ (4–6 months): Aim for fewer than 10 wrong answers per section, practice listening at 1.25x speed, read business publications, and master inference questions in Part 7.
