What Is the Studentereksamen?
The Studentereksamen (STX) is Denmark's upper secondary leaving examination, completed after three years of gymnasium. It is one of several upper secondary qualifications in Denmark alongside HF (Higher Preparatory Examination), HHX (Higher Commercial Examination), and HTX (Higher Technical Examination).
The STX is a prerequisite for admission to Danish universities and many professional programs. Exams are held in May and June each year, covering both written and oral components across a range of compulsory and elective subjects. Written exams are centrally set by the Ministry of Children and Education.
How to Prepare for the Studentereksamen
Effective Studentereksamen preparation requires sustained effort across all subjects throughout the gymnasium years, not just in the final weeks. That said, the examination period demands focused revision. Create a detailed timetable covering all written exams (May–June) and oral exams (June–July), and allocate more time to subjects with higher exam weight.
Practice with past written exam papers (available from the Ministry website) under timed conditions. For oral exams, rehearse with a study partner and practice structuring clear, argued presentations. Danish, Mathematics, and your main foreign language are typically the most heavily weighted subjects.
Studentereksamen Grading and University Admission
Danish exams use the 7-point scale: 12 (Excellent), 10 (Very Good), 7 (Good), 4 (Fair), 02 (Minimum pass), 00 (Not acceptable), -3 (Unacceptable). A final STX average is calculated from all examination and course grades.
University admission in Denmark is managed through the Coordinated Enrollment (KOT) system. The most competitive programs at University of Copenhagen require averages above 10–11 on the 7-point scale. Standby (kvote 2) admission also considers extracurricular criteria. Tracking how many days remain until your exams helps you pace your revision and avoid burnout.
