What Is the TestDaF?
The TestDaF (Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache — Test of German as a Foreign Language) is the primary standardized German language exam accepted by all German and many international universities as proof of language proficiency. It is developed and administered by the TestDaF-Institut and is offered at approved test centers worldwide several times per year.
The exam has four components: Reading Comprehension (Leseverstehen), Listening Comprehension (Hörverstehen), Written Expression (Schriftlicher Ausdruck), and Oral Expression (Mündlicher Ausdruck). Each section is graded on levels TDN 3, TDN 4, and TDN 5 — where TDN 5 is the highest. Most German universities require TDN 4 in all four sections for unrestricted admission.
How to Prepare for TestDaF
Effective TestDaF preparation requires at least B2 level German before starting targeted exam practice. The TestDaF-Institut publishes official preparation materials including past exam papers and a preparation course (Musterprüfungen) that closely replicate the real exam format.
Focus heavily on academic German vocabulary and text types, as the exam uses authentic university-level texts on scientific, social, and cultural topics. For the oral section, practice structuring responses to graphs and statistics under the 3-minute response format. For written expression, master the format of presenting, commenting on, and evaluating data. Regular feedback from a qualified German teacher dramatically accelerates progress.
TestDaF Levels and German University Admission
TestDaF results are reported as four separate section scores at levels TDN 3, 4, or 5. There is no single composite score. TDN 4 in all four sections is broadly equivalent to B2/C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and is the standard requirement for most undergraduate programs at German universities.
Some programs, especially medical and law faculties, require TDN 5 in all sections. Applicants who do not meet the required level in all sections may be required to take a German language course (Sprachkurs) or DSH exam instead. Planning your exam date well in advance — and using this countdown to track remaining preparation time — is essential, as TestDaF results take roughly six weeks to arrive.
