What Is the Matura?
The Matura is Poland's national school-leaving examination, taken by students completing their secondary education at the end of liceum (general secondary school) or technikum (technical secondary school). Passing the Matura is required for university admission in Poland and is recognized across the European Union. The exam is administered by the Central Examination Commission (Centralna Komisja Egzaminacyjna, CKE) and consists of mandatory written exams in Polish Language, Mathematics, and a foreign language, all at the basic level. Students must also take at least one subject at the extended level (poziom rozszerzony) for university admission purposes. The Matura has both written and oral components, with oral exams in Polish and the foreign language. Results are expressed as percentages, and a minimum of 30% is required to pass each mandatory subject.
Matura 2026 Schedule and Format
The Matura 2026 examinations are scheduled to begin on May 5, 2026. The written exam period spans approximately three weeks, with the Polish Language exam typically held first. Mathematics follows within the first week, and the foreign language exam shortly after. Extended-level exams in elective subjects are scheduled throughout the remaining days. Each written exam lasts between 170 and 210 minutes depending on the subject and level. Oral exams in Polish Language and the foreign language are held during the written exam period, organized by individual schools. Results are published in early July. Students who fail one or two mandatory exams can retake them in an August session. Our countdown shows the exact time remaining until the first Matura paper, helping you plan your final revision phase effectively.
Matura Preparation Strategies
Effective Matura preparation requires a well-organized study plan covering all mandatory and chosen extended-level subjects. Start by reviewing the CKE exam specifications (informatory), which detail the format, assessment criteria, and topic scope for each subject. For Polish Language, practice essay writing in the required formats (rozprawka, interpretacja) and review literary works from the mandatory reading list. For Mathematics, work through arkusze maturalne (past exam papers) methodically, ensuring you understand the solution methods rather than just memorizing answers. Foreign language preparation should cover reading, listening, writing, and speaking skills equally. For extended-level subjects, study beyond the textbook, exploring academic-level materials for deeper understanding. Create a weekly schedule that balances all subjects and includes regular timed practice tests. Study groups can be valuable for discussing complex topics, especially in humanities subjects. Maintain a healthy lifestyle with proper sleep and exercise during the intensive study period.
