DZI Exam Countdown (Bulgaria)

The ДЗИ (Държавни зрелостни изпити), known in English as the State Matriculation Exams or DZI, are Bulgaria's national school-leaving examinations. Administered by the Ministry of Education and Science, these exams are taken by all students completing secondary education at the end of 12th grade. The DZI serve a dual purpose: they certify that a student has completed secondary education and they provide scores used for university admissions. Students must pass at least two mandatory exams — Bulgarian Language and Literature, and a second subject of their choice. The results determine eligibility for higher education programs across Bulgarian universities and play a critical role in shaping each student's academic future.

The DZI 2026 examinations are scheduled to begin on May 20, 2026. The mandatory Bulgarian Language and Literature exam is typically held first, followed by the elective second subject within the same week. Each written exam lasts four hours and covers the full curriculum of the respective subject. Results are graded on a scale from 2 (fail) to 6 (excellent).
