What Are the DZI Exams?
The ДЗИ (Държавни зрелостни изпити), known in English as the State Matriculation Exams or DZI, are Bulgaria's national school-leaving examinations. Administered by the Ministry of Education and Science, these exams are taken by all students completing secondary education at the end of 12th grade. The DZI serve a dual purpose: they certify that a student has completed secondary education and they provide scores used for university admissions. Students must pass at least two mandatory exams — Bulgarian Language and Literature, and a second subject of their choice. The results determine eligibility for higher education programs across Bulgarian universities and play a critical role in shaping each student's academic future.
DZI 2026 Exam Schedule
The DZI 2026 examinations are scheduled to begin on May 20, 2026. The mandatory Bulgarian Language and Literature exam is typically held first, followed by the elective second subject within the same week. Additional optional exams may be taken in subsequent days for students who wish to improve their university application profiles. Each written exam lasts four hours and covers the full curriculum of the respective subject. Results are graded on a scale from 2 (fail) to 6 (excellent). Students who fail may retake the exams in a September session. Our countdown shows you exactly how much time remains to prepare for the first DZI paper, helping you organize your revision schedule effectively.
Tips for DZI Preparation
Successful preparation for the DZI exams requires a disciplined and systematic approach. Start by reviewing the official exam requirements published by the Bulgarian Ministry of Education for each subject you plan to take. For the Bulgarian Language and Literature exam, focus on essay writing skills and thorough knowledge of the literary works on the required reading list. For science and mathematics subjects, practice solving problems from previous exam papers to familiarize yourself with the question formats and difficulty level. Create a study schedule that covers all topics systematically, dedicating extra time to areas where you feel less confident. Work with classmates in study groups to discuss challenging concepts and test each other's understanding. During the weeks leading up to the exam, take practice tests under real exam conditions to build your stamina and time management skills.
