What Is the YDS Exam?

The Yabancı Dil Bilgisi Seviye Tespit Sınavı (YDS) is Turkey’s national foreign language proficiency examination, administered by ÖSYM. YDS measures reading comprehension and grammar knowledge in a chosen foreign language—most commonly English, though German, French, Arabic, and Russian are also offered. The exam is primarily used for academic career advancement, including associate professorship (doçentlik) applications, graduate programme admissions, and foreign language requirements at public institutions. YDS consists of 80 multiple-choice questions to be completed in 180 minutes, covering vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension, translation, and cloze passages. Scores range from 0 to 100, with different thresholds required depending on the purpose—academic positions typically require 65 or higher, while some programmes accept lower scores.

When Is YDS 2026?

YDS is typically administered twice per year, with sessions in spring (usually March–April) and autumn (usually September–October). ÖSYM publishes the official exam calendar including YDS dates early in the year. Registration opens approximately six weeks before each session through the ÖSYM online portal. Additionally, e-YDS (electronic YDS) sessions are offered throughout the year at ÖSYM testing centres, providing more flexible scheduling options. Our countdown timer tracks the time remaining until the next YDS session. Since YDS scores are critical for academic career milestones, staying informed about upcoming dates and deadlines is essential for effective planning.

How to Prepare for YDS

YDS preparation focuses on academic-level reading and grammar rather than speaking or listening skills. Build a strong vocabulary base with emphasis on academic and formal registers—YDS texts are drawn from academic journals, scientific articles, and formal publications. Master English grammar systematically, paying special attention to complex sentence structures, conditionals, relative clauses, and passive constructions. Practise with past YDS papers (available from ÖSYM) to understand question patterns and difficulty levels. For reading comprehension, develop strategies for quickly identifying main ideas, supporting details, and author intent. For cloze passages, focus on contextual clues and collocations. Time management is important—with 80 questions in 180 minutes, you have approximately 2.25 minutes per question. Regular practice under timed conditions will help you build both speed and accuracy.
